The History of Tennis

The game of tennis is directly related to what's known as royal tennis, a separate sport still played today with more complex rules and regulations. Tennis originated in the monastic cloisters in France in the 12th century, when the ball was struck with players' palms. This gave the game a temporary name of jeu de paume (game of the palm). In the 16th century rackets began to be used, an the name of the game was changed to tennis. It gained popularity in England and France, even attracting the approval of Henry VIII of England.

Many of the original tennis courts still stand, including those in Oxford, Cambridge, Falkland Palace and Hampton Court Palace. Many French courts were decommissioned with the French Revolution, with the Tennis Court Oath being a pivotal event in the first days of the Revolution. The Oath was a pledge signed by all but one of the members from the Third Estate who were locked out of a meeting of the Estates-General in June of 1789.
