The History of Wands
Wands have been seen as mystical items dating back to at least ancient Egyptian times. “Magic” wands in Pharaonic Egypt were placed in tombs so that the ba (soul) could wield them against their enemies. Wands have also been seen in Greco-Roman mythology (Hermes carries a wand called a caduceus), have been used throughout many Freemason rituals and have popped up here and there in various groups and/or religions.
The earliest siting of a wand in Western literacy may be in the Odyssey. In it, Circe changes Odysseus’s men into animals with a wave of her wand. In the Middle Ages, European fairy tales would describe fairies wielding wands, and by the 20th century became a staple in many fantasy fiction works. From the especially evil Snow Queen in the Chronicles of Narnia to the more Harry Potter series, wands are often an everyday appearance in the fantasy genre.
Kids Wands as Party Favors
Magic wand party favors are fantastic for any wizard themed or magical based theme party. Kids can play act that they are wizards or sorcerers on a special quest. Or, take it a step further and set up a quest for them. Put together some play coins, “magical” rings and other magical items for them to find after performing a few necessary steps.
If your party is more magician in theme, then give these magic wands for kids out to each guest before the performance of a trick or two. Make the tricks simple so that afterwards they can be explained, and everyone can be given a turn to try. Of course, make sure that they wave their magic wand before the trick’s final step!
