Princeton University had a known (documented) “Princeton Cheer” in the late 1800’s. This cheer was shouted out by students at their team sports and other competitive events. The cheer is still used today with a couple of varitations.
Thomas Peeble, a Princeton graduate, moved to Minnesota in 1884 to become the football coach. He brought along this notion of organized crowd cheering to the University of Minnesota. And, where Princeton had named their own “Cheer Leaders”, the University of Minnesota decided to do this too. On November 2, 1898, UofM student Johnny Campbell led the crowd in cheering “Rah!, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity Minn-e-So-Tah!”. This made Campbell the first ever cheerleader, and this date the official date of organized cheerleading.
Cheerleading was confined to men until 1907. It was in that year that women first joined. They would go on to gradually dominate the sport, especially after the onset of World War II. It was just after World War II that former cheerleader Lawrence “Herkie” Herkimer founded the National Cheerleaders Association. This organization would soon hold cheerleading clinics and cheerleading would grow in popularity. Today, cheerleading is everywhere. High schools, colleges, Universities continue and even a number of professional teams support their own cheerleading squads.
