Michigan International Speedway

In Michigan, when we think of Nascar and other racing events, we think of Michigan International Speedway. MIS, located in Brooklyn, Michigan (pretty much right in our own backyard) is one of racing’s premier tracks, and is known for its wide surfaces, long straightaways and high banking. It’s also typically one of the fastest tracks in NASCAR.

History of Michigan International Speedway

Lawrence LoPatin, a land developer out of the Detroit area, was behind the groundbreaking of the original Michigan Speedway in 1967. The track would be ready for its first race (an Indy style event) the following year, on October 13, 1968, and it would begin with a splash. Offering an initial purse second only to the famous Indianapolis 500, the 250 mile track paid its first winner, Ronnie Bucknum $20,088. Cale Yarborough would later win the first NASCAR race at Michigan Speedway.

In 1971 and 1972, LoPatin’s racing company American Raceways, Inc. filed for bankruptcy, a result of primarily too much expansion into other raceways in other states. Shortly thereafter in 1973, Roger Penske purchased the deed for MIS at an estimated cost of two million dollars. Despite, the oil crisis, Penske saw an opportunity in the raceway. And, over the years he would add improvement after improvement.

Eventually, Michigan International Speedway would increase its seating from an estimated 25,000 seats to 125,000 seats. They would add additional building and suites for their fans. It was these improvements, and Penske’s leadership that kept Michigan International Speedway a premier racing destination, and a draw for NASCAR fans everywhere. Today, they continue to be one of the leaders in the racing and motorsports industry.
