The Muppets have a fun-filled history, dating back to their creation in 1954-55. Jim Henson, of course, was the creator and has said that the word “Muppet” came from a combination of “marionette” and “puppet”. It was in 1954 that Henson (while attending high school) would begin creating puppets for a children’s morning show. Later, he was asked to create a short puppet show for a local TV station which was named “Sam and Friends”. It was here that many of the forerunners of the Muppets were created including the first version of Kermit the Frog.
Over time, Henson would develop different camera techniques that allowed for the puppets (or Muppets) to look more lifelike. Mainly, this involved shooting the puppets in a way where the puppeteers were out of the shot and were still able to give the puppet the needed movement. Henson also, started building puppets with better materials. Fabric-covered foam rubber allowed the puppets to have greater expressiveness, bringing more life to his work. He also used rods to move the characters arms versus the standard puppet strings.
Henson continued to work with puppets in various commercials and television shows until he moved to New York City with his wife in 1963. It was here he formed Muppets, Inc. When his wife stopped working to raise their children, Henson hired Frank Oz. Henson and Oz would go on to create a number of extremely successful characters including Bert and Ernie, Kermit and Fozzie Bear.
Eventually, Henson was asked to work for Sesame Street. And, it was on Sesame Street that The Muppets would grow in popularity. In 1976, Henson wanted The Muppets to branch out with their own television show. Initially rejected by American networks, he was able to get financing in the United Kingdom, and the show was eventually syndicated worldwide. Later, in 1979, The Muppet Movie came out featuring the hit Kermit song “The Rainbow Connection”, and the rest is history.
