Monsters in the Movies

The word monster comes from the Latin word “monstrum” which was defined as a bad occurrence that typically meant something in the natural world was out of alignment. It typically means a foreboding of something evil or harmful, in the form of a ugly, abomination of nature. Okay, now that I’ve dispensed with the pleasantries, let’s look at monsters in Hollywood over the last century.

In the early years of moviemaking, in both silent and early talking era, monsters tended to be somewhat normal sized (normal for monsters that is). Typical monsters featured at the time were the likes of Frankenstein, vampires (Dracula, of course), werewolves, zombies and others. There were larger-sized exceptions a well such as a handful of dinosaurs and, of course, King Kong.

A little after World War II, monsters in the movies began to get bigger. One reason for the change in focus was the advent of nuclear weapons and the scares of radiation. Godzilla and his many imitators are an obvious example of this trend. Other alien giants like King Ghidorah and Gigan (look them up) also appeared.

As the years went on, monster size became less of a factor and the attitudes of monsters changed. Friendlier “monsters” began to appear, especially after the Star Wars movies. Chewbacca, Edward Scissorhands, Shrek, and plenty of other examples of the friendly, or misunderstood, monster showed up in film.

Today, it’s hard to think of a type of monster that hasn’t been done and redone. Zombies are appearing on television and the big screen, Cloverfield was a recent movie featuring a giant Godzilla type monster, and, of course, Monsters Inc. shows and movies bring a wide variety of cartoon monster to the forefront. Monsters, whether scary or friendly, are everywhere.
