The Very Hungry Caterpillar was first published in 1969. Both written and illustrated by Eric Carle, it tells the story of a very hungry caterpillar who eats a variety of food items. Then, once it finishes with its snacks, it begins pupating and eventually emerges as a beautiful butterfly.
Eric Carle came up for the idea for his story while looking at a hole punch, but he didn’t originally think of a caterpillar. Instead, he thought of a bookworm and named his story A Week with Will the Worm. However, Carle’s editor didn’t like the bookworm because she felt that a bookworm would be an unlikable main character. So, she suggested a caterpillar instead. To Carle’s credit, he immediately seized on the idea and added the transformation to a butterfly. The story about hunger and metamorphosis was a success, selling over 30 million copies and climbing, and today The Very Hungry Caterpillar is recognized as a children’s classic.
