Sesame Street History and Characters

Sesame Street is a lovable age-old series first produced by Sesame Workshop in 1969. The show’s iconic puppets were created by Jim Henson, and the show gained a place on HBO in January of 2016.

Sesame Street is a show about a gang of…well…puppets that live in close proximity to one another. Some are friendly, some are mean, some are smart, some are not, some are energetic and some really love cookies! Sesame Street’s most popular characters include Bert, Grover, Elmo, Ernie, Snuffleupagus, the Count, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird and the Cookie Monster, though many more characters have taken shape since the show’s original debut.

Sesame Street Birthday Ideas

Sesame Street has been around for so long that there is an absolute plethora online of great Sesame Street ideas to help kick off your party. Here are some, brought to you by the letter(s) DiscountPartySupplies!

Sesame Street Snack Trays: A simple, fun and healthy idea is a Sesame Street Snack Tray! Using round colored or glass bowls, fill the bowl with the snack of your choice and color-coordinate it with a Sesame Street character. Try strawberries or raspberries for Elmo. Fill smaller containers with white fruit dip and place at the top of the bowl for eyes, then place a black snack (such as a blackberry) in the middle of each of the fruit dip bowls for the pupils. Use something orange (such as a small clementine) for the nose.

Street Sign Chair Decorations: Find a large blank printable version of the classic yellow-and-green Sesame Street sign (or create them yourself) and use a white pen or marker to decorate with each child’s name. Stencils would probably be helpful for this. Come up with something creative, such as “Sam Street”, “Lacey Lane”, “Rodney Road”, etc. and create a fun place setting for each child.

Oscar’s Trash Pail Favor Buckets: Use mini metal buckets to resemble Oscar the Grouch’s trash-can home. Fill them with jelly beans, candies or other small favors and create super-cute party decorations. For an even better look, find small cutouts of Oscar’s head online and attach them to short popsicle sticks. Put the popsicle stick in the bucket and cover them with the candies, so that all you’ll see is Oscar’s head sticking out of your “trash can”.
