While many see Oktoberfest as an “adults only” holiday, there’s no reason kids can’t celebrate the German autumn festival, in their own way, alongside the adults. The festival actually started in Munich, Germany as a city-wide wedding celebration and horse race for the entertainment of King Ludwig I and his bride, Princess Theresa. At its heart, it remains a multi-generational town party.
A kid-friendly Oktoberfest makes a great neighborhood gathering or family party. Traditionally held from the third weekend in September until the first Sunday in October, an Oktoberfest themed party is a great way to kick off autumn.
The Bavarian region of Germany is famous for its beer and Oktoberfest celebrates that rich tradition. However, it’s certainly not something for the kids. For the younger crowd, you could serve a variety of root beers and ginger ales instead.
The food at Oktoberfest is amazing. Sausages and pretzels figure heavily into the Oktoberfest menu but so do German delicacies like apple strudel and sugared almonds called Gebrannte Mendeln.
Grill bratwursts or other sausages and slice into bite-sized pieces that can be speared with toothpicks. (Picky eaters might prefer hot dogs.) Arrange a selection of mustards from sweet and mild, like honey mustard, to lively grainy mustards or even a spicy version. Kids will likely prefer the sweeter versions but let adventurous eaters try tastes of the other choices. You might be surprised at what they choose as a favorite.
For dessert, Black Forest cake makes a delicious treat. Top a dark chocolate cake with a rim of white icing and fill the middle with cherry pie filling. You could also opt for a more traditional strudel layered with apples and raisins.
For a fun activity, commemorate the first Oktoberfest’s horse races with a foot race for the kids. Don’t forget to set up a crepe paper finish line for the winner to break through. Adults can join in as the “horse” and piggyback small children across the finish line. Carnival games are also fun and give your party a street fair feeling.
