Some History of Georgia Football

A chemistry professor, Charles Herty, became the head coach when the first football team for Georgia formed in 1892. Their first game was against Mercer and is thought by many to be the first football game played in the deep South. Georgia won 50-0. Later, they would lose their second, and last, game of the season to Auburn 10-0. This marked the start of the rivalry with Auburn known as the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.

In 1897, football almost ended in the State of Georgia, after Georgia running back, Richard Gammon, died after being injured in a game. The Georgia legislature passed a law banning football, but the Governor vetoed the law after Richard’s mother appealed on the game’s behalf. If not for that appeal, Georgia football may have had a much different history.

Georgia Football National Championships

In 1927, despite being upset by Georgia Tech in their final game of the season 12-0, Georgia finished their season with a 9-1 record and were voted #1 by two different pools.

In 1942, the Georgia Bulldogs beat UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl. This culminated a 11-1 season and led to the Bulldogs being voted #1 in a couple of recognized polls.

Georgia went undefeated in 1946 and finished 11-0. They ended the season with a 20-10 victory over the North Carolina Tarheels.

In 1968, after losing to Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, Georgia was still voted #1 by one recognized poll despite their nine wins, 1 loss and 2 ties.

Led by phenomenal running back Herschel Walker, Georgia went undefeated in 1980. The Bulldogs ended their season by beating Notre Dame 17-10 in the Sugar Bowl and were proclaimed the #1 team by a slew of publications.
