Florida Gators Sports Program

Known as one of the best performing sports programs in the SEC (if not the nation), the Florida Gators teams consistently compete for championships in both men’s and women’s athletics. The most well-known of the Gator’s teams is probably the men’s basketball team and the men’s football team. Of those two, the men’s football team is certainly the most followed.

Florida Gators Basketball

The men’s basketball team has gained tremendous success in recent years after a fairly up and down past. Coached by Billy Donovan since 1996 (having taken over from Lon Kruger who went to Illinois), the Gators have made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances. This included a school record eight-year streak from 1999-2007.

The Gators have also made the Championship game three times, losing to Michigan State (despite the Teddy Dupay trip of MSU’s Mateen Cleaves) in 2000, before winning back-to-back National Championships in 2006 and 2007. After Florida’s second championship, Donovan considered coaching in the NBA with the Orlando Magic, actually going so far as to accept the job. Immediately thereafter, he had a change of heart and requested to be released by the Magic, so that he could continue coaching with Florida. The Magic granted the release, Donovan signed a new contract with the Gators, and continues to coach today.

Florida Gators Football

The Florida Gators fielded their first varsity football team in 1906. Since that time, the Gators have had sustained success for most of that time, going to numerous bowl games and producing numerous All-Americans. Steve Spurrier lead the Gators to their first National Championship in 1996. That team, quarterbacked by Heisman-winner Danny Wuerffel, went 11-1 before ending the season by playing rival Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. Florida won in a route (52-20), establishing that team as one of the best of the decade.

After Steve Spurrier left the Gators for an NFL job and elsewhere, Urban Meyer eventually became the Gators football coach in 2004. Two years later, the 2006 Gator team won the school’s second National Championship (in January, 2007) by defeating Ohio State 41-14. The next year, in the later part of 2007, Quarterback Tim Tebow won the Heisman Trophy. A year later, Tebow led the Gators to their third National Championship after beating the Oklahoma Sooners.

Every year brings hope of another championship to Gators fans everywhere. Celebrate the start of another successful season with the help of our fantastic Florida Gators Party Supplies!
