What’s Up With the Zebra and His Stripes?

So zebras are striped. You may have noticed this yourself. But what else can we tell you about the zebra that you don’t already know? Maybe nothing. Maybe you’re some kind of zebra expert, who knows everything there is to know about zebras. But we’re willing to give it a try anyway. So, here with go with some zebra knowledge you may, or may not, be aware of.

So, is the zebra white with black stripes or black with white stripes. Well, not that matters much to most people, but the zebra is actually black with white stripes. The zebra stripes are typically vertical across most of the body with horizontal stripes at the rear and on the legs. There are a few main hypotheses to explain the striping.

The first theory suggests that the striping has developed as camouflage for the zebra in high grass. While the black and white might stand out to you and me, the black and white aren’t believed to stand out against the zebra’s color blind predator, the lion. Even without the color blindness, the zebra stripes can seem a mingled gray from a distance. A separate, but similar thought is that a herd of striped zebra together might confuse some animals as to their size, and may actually seem like one big animal to some.

Another theory is that the stripes offer unique signatures to the zebra themselves. This would perhaps allow zebras to recognize each other to some degree.

Yet another theory, and one that has been positively tested to some degree, deals with the tsetse fly. The black and white patterns have been proven to confuse this and other flies. Finally, there are other theories dealing with metabolism and mating, as well.

So, now that you’ve read all about zebra stripes, the next time this comes up in polite conversation, you can offer up a few theories. This will undoubtedly impress your friends and those standing nearby, and even may propel you to some sort of limited stardom in your circles of influence. You’re welcome.
