Why drink champagne from a flute?

The glass flute (as opposed to a coupe or other cocktail glass) is especially built to hold in the carbonation (or bubbles) that champagne is known for. Because of its long, thin shape, the flute’s surface area at the top of the glass is kept very small. This narrow opening helps lock in the bubbles for a much longer period of time than other types of glasses. And, bubbles are especially desirable for sparkling style drinks.

Ever wonder about the proper etiquette of toasting? For instance, is it considered rude to partake in a toast while drinking water? Here are a few things you should know about giving a toast.

Typically, a toast should be offered while standing, while the person being toasted and the guests can remain seated.

Make sure that everyone’s glass is full before the toast begins.

A toast shouldn’t be overly long (a toast is not a speech).

It is not ideal, but it is acceptable to clank your utensils on your glass to gain everyone’s attention.

If a toast is given at a dinner, it should usually be given at the start of the meal.

The toastee should not stand, but should instead sit and smile during the toast. When the toaster is finished with the toast, the toastee should graciously say “thank you,” and perhaps even stand and propose a quick toast in return to someone else (the host, maybe).
