Up until the early part of the 20th century, students at most schools, people on passenger trains, workers in office buildings and people almost everywhere used shared glasses to drink from common water sources. Eventually, as you can probably guess, this caused health concerns amongst the public. Studies were performed (best exemplified by a study by Alvin Davison) that described the health risks in detail.

This problem was eventually solved by the paper cup. Basically, as paper goods became easier and cheaper to manufacture (and with the invention of the Dixie Cup in 1908), the country began to ban the use of common cups. Soon, paper cups were being used everywhere both for health reasons and to save money. Today, paper cups have evolved into different shapes and sizes. Plastics are now frequently used instead of paper for a more durable, longer lasting tableware and drinkware.
