Edible cake images are a dynamic way to add personality to your birthday or party cake, and you can even order them up to two weeks in advance, because they are freeze/thaw stable. But, is it easy to place an image on a cake? The answer is yes, and here’s how:

First, gently remove the edible image from its bag or other packaging. Make sure you reseal the package after removal if you have other edible images. Keep the package in a cool, dry place as these images can get sticky in humid conditions. If the image is sticking, you may want to place it in a freezer for 30-60 seconds (Not any longer!).

Next, peel the backing away from the edible image. It the backing does not come away easily, it can help to lay the image on a flat surface (like a counter) and allow one side to hang off of the edge a bit. Gently bend the image over the counter edge to help the backing separate. Be careful not to leave it out in the open for long. The image can dry and cracks can appear.

Next, you’ll want to have your cake ready. Hold your edible image from each side and bring it to the correct position over your cake. Allow the image to bow downward in the middle just a little, so that the middle will make contact with the cake first. Lower the image onto the cake (again, the middle first, then the sides) until the image is resting flat on the cake.

Finally, if needed, gently press out any imperfections (like wrinkles or bubbles) by hand, but don’t rub the image. Do this carefully, and try not to drive yourself nuts by removing every perceived small imperfection. Again, start at the middle and work out towards the sides. DO NOT press the image into the cake.
