Cake Knives & Servers: Wedding Cake Servers, Wedding Cake Knives, and Cake Servers.

Cake knives are frequently found with the bride and groom at most wedding ceremonies. As you probably know, the cake knife is used by the bride and groom together to jointly cut the wedding cake. This act (“The Cutting the Cake Ceremony”) symbolizes the couples’ first united function together as a married couple.

Cake knife sets are an elegant, but often overlooked, part of the wedding ceremony. With so many things to plan for a wedding, purchasing a cake knife can frequently slip through the cracks. This is unfortunate because a cake knife is usually involved in a number of pictures surrounding the wedding cake and cake cutting ceremony.

Did you know? The cake cutting ceremony was originally meant only for the bride. It was the bride that would cut the cake alone and be responsible for the sharing of cake with her guests. It was only after weddings became larger and cakes grew in size as well, that the cake ceremony became difficult for the bride to accomplish on her own. It also didn’t help that cakes became made of greater amounts of harder icing in order for the cake to support its own weight. Eventually, the cake cutting ceremony evolved into a united effort for both the bride and groom. This also led to the tradition of the bride and groom feeding the cake to each other which symbolizes the commitment of the couple to one another.

What about the groom’s cake you ask? The groom’s cake is a tradition that is much less common today. In the past, a groom’s cake was a smaller cake compared to the wedding (or bride’s) cake and was often decorated with a darker, contrasting color. The groom’s cake tradition seems to simply have suffered from the greater prominence of the cutting the cake ceremony and other “couples together” activities.
