The History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

One evening in 1984, artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were brainstorming different cartoon ideas when Eastman jokingly sketched out what would become the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Liking the concept, the two pieced together some money and self-published a single issue starring these new turtle characters. Meant as a humorous parody of some of the more popular comic heroes of the time, the comic didn’t really do much.

That changed in 1986 when licensing agent Mark Freedman discovered the Ninja Turtles and sought out their creators to license some merchandise based on them. Next, Dark Horse Miniatures would produce a set of Ninja Turtles lead figures. Playmates Toys Inc. wanted to expand into action-figures so they teamed up with the others and set their marketing team to work on a back story for the turtles. It would be here that many of the slogans of and about the turtles would develop and a miniseries would be produced. It took a few showings, but eventually a catchy idea and growing merchandise sales turned the heads of a few network executives. Eventually, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would air on CBS for ten years from 1987 to 1996.

Today, Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael are back in a new series with new episodes. As popular as ever, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seem here to stay. Celebrate the fun and excitement of the Ninja Turtles at your next get-together with our exciting and new Ninja Turtle party supplies!
