Paczki’s – They Don’t Call It Fat Tuesday for Nothing

What is a Paczki? More importantly, do you know how to pronounce it? Paczki’s (pronounced “Poonch-key”)  are sugar-coated, glazed or iced pastries that are filled to the point of bursting with fruit or cream filling. These Polish filled doughnuts are traditional fare for Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. Historically, they were a perfect way to use up all the sugar and fruit (i.e. good stuff) in the pantry before the austerity of Lent began. These treats are wildly popular in the days leading up to Mardi Gras in metropolitan areas with large Polish populations but now they can often be found in chain grocery stores as well.

Of course, the best Paczki’s are the free ones in the office break room, but if you are feeling adventurous and want to try to make your own you can watch the video below for some tips and techniques on how to make them at home. It’s not as complicated as you think!

If you haven’t tried a paczki I strongly encourage you to do so. Don’t think that these are just like the traditional jelly filled doughnuts that you can get anywhere, anytime. Paczki dough is much richer, it literally melts in your mouth. Put these on the menu for your Mardi Gras party — yes, they are so calorie laden that they should probably be illegal — but Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday, if you prefer) is a time for excess. So enjoy and indulge while you can. I know I’m going to!!
