Uglydoll Party Supplies are coming to Discount Party Supplies! We are so excited about this line, because we are longtime fans of Uglydoll!
Uglydolls were first introduced in January, 2001. They were designed by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, as an alternative to the stuffed animals that have been traditionally played with by children for decades. Fluffy bunnies, fuzzy bears, sweet kittens, and floppy-eared dogs are what people were used to seeing, and it was time for a change! They were awarded the specialty toy of the year award in 2006, and have been hugely popular with children all over the world for more than a decade!
The story of how Uglydoll began is a surprisingly romantic one. David and Sun were engaged to be married, but her student visa ran out, and she had to leave the country. They kept in touch by writing letters (so old-fashioned, so sweet!) and in one letter, David drew a picture of one of the Uglydoll characters, Wage. When she got the letter, she decided to sew a version of the character for him, as a surprise. When he received the doll, he was so delighted that he showed it to a friend. The friend thought that he was showing him a new product, and immediately asked him if he could order a few for his store. David immediately wrote back to Sun, asking her if she could make a few more, and Uglydoll was born!
