Moms Will Love It! – Indoor S’mores

Want a fun and easy indoor activity to do with the kids to help chase away some of the winter blues? How about making indoor s’mores? It’s too cold right now (for many of us) to sit around a campfire telling stories and making s’mores so why not bring it inside? This would be great for a kids’ sledding party, winter birthday party, or any slumber party. It’s perfect for elementary school age kids, tweens and teens alike. Heck, I would even love it for my birthday party (if I still celebrated my birthday, that is….ha ha  just kidding, I’m not THAT old but I’m getting there).

With just a little prep work by you (the adult) to melt the chocolate in a double boiler and transfer it to the fondue pot, you can then let the kids take charge of dipping the marshmallows into the gooey chocolate and make their own s’mores.  Set out a tray of fresh fruits like bananas, strawberries and pineapple chunks for more dipping fun.  If you don’t have a fondue pot, use a small crock pot to keep the chocolate warm during the party. Of course, if you have small children involved you’ll want to provide the appropriate supervision to make sure no little fingers get burned.

Give this a try. I’ll bet that you’ll find that it will be a hit with kids of all ages. Set out a few winter-ish party decorations, make up a beautiful fruit tray, melt the chocolate and stock up on graham crackers and marshmallows and bring some ‘summer’ time fun into your home in the middle of winter.

Basic Chocolate Fondue

Ingredients

1    11 1/2 ounce package milk chocolate pieces
1/4    cup milk
Milk (see directions for additional milk amounts)

Directions

1. In the top of a double boiler placed over gently simmering water, or in heavy small saucepan, combine the chocolate pieces and 1/4 cup milk. Heat, stirring constantly, over low heat until chocolate is melted and smooth. Cook and stir till heated through. Stir in additional milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency.

2. Pour mixture into a fondue pot; place over fondue burner set on low. With fondue forks or long skewers,  dip marshmallows into chocolate mixture. Place chocolate dipped marshmallows between two graham crackers and serve immediately.  (Will hold up to 1 hour on low. If mixture gets too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time.) Makes 5 (1/4-cup) servings.
