Breaking Dawn Party Supplies are now in stock and it’s a great time to start planning your Breaking Dawn party! The immensely popular Twilight saga has been thrilling and capturing the hearts of tweens and teens for a few years now and the suspense is rising in anticipation of the final installments of the series to be released in theaters. “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” is set to be released in just a few weeks on November 18th, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t host a Breaking Dawn party for your daughter now! We’ve got everything you’ll need!
Invitations
Invitations can easily be done online, but in the spirit of the Twilight saga, we suggest handwriting simple invitations that you can age with a used tea bag. In fact, you could even create small invitations out of the used tea bags themselves. Just wait for the tea to dry after use and then open up the bag carefully and empty out the leaves to use the paper. But I like to just stain white or off-white construction paper with a damp tea bag. You don’t have to be an expert calligrapher, just present the details of the party and then either trace or draw a queen from a chessboard as a decoration, leaving it white, as on the cover of the Breaking Dawn book, and then draw a red pawn and stick it on the invitation. Or you could print them out from the internet to stick on your invitations. Another option is to simply get a red rollerball pen and let a few drops of ink drip on to each invitation as drops of blood. I’m no artist, but I tried it and it works well on different types of paper.
Decorations
For the day of the party, you’ll need to prepare a few things to strike the right mood in terms of decorations, atmosphere, food and activities. For decorations, start out by ordering black dinner plates and cups. You can give your party some shimmer by ordering black and silver serpentine streamers to hang from ceiling fans, lights and doorways. For wall decorations, check out your local video store to see if they can give you some Twilight posters for free or next-to-nothing. For the right atmosphere, you could go all out and rent a fog machine, which will run you about $75. If you’d like to save that money, just pick up a pack of candles from your local hardware store for just a few bucks and light them just before your guests arrive. Just keep an eye on them and try to place them in out of reach or out of the way places for safety’s sake. If you’ve got flameless candles at home, then use those. You can get a set of 6 at Walmart for under $20. Add flowers to your home and any chess sets or pieces you might have, to fit in with the cover of the book.
Games and Activities
While you’re at your local video store looking for posters, rent New Moon or Eclipse, since your guests will probably want to hunker down with snacks at some point and relive the lead up to Breaking Dawn. Hours of activities right there! Other activities could include picking quotes from the book and having to identify the speaker or bobbing for apples. It just depends on the energy levels and ages of your guests! I admit that my favorite party activity to plan and watch is bobbing for apples. Just pick up some vampire fangs and before the party, fill a baby bath tub or large bucket with water and apples (with the stems on). Then, when your guests are ready for the fun, hand out a pair of fangs to each guest, and have each one take turns, blindfolded with a scarf or kitchen towel, bobbing for apples. It’s really fun and the fangs add a bit more of a challenge to each bob!
Food and Drink
Food for this party can be healthy and simple. Place a silver bowl with red apples in it for guests to munch on. You could also stand red and black licorice sticks in a glass. Australian red licorice is popular right now. Since the Cullens are “vegetarian” vampires, you can serve veggie burgers with oven fries and coleslaw. Or you could serve pasta pomodoro to your guests, as a nod to the Italian Volturi and to the Cullens, because the sauce is red but has no meat in it. For drinks, you can serve hot chocolate with red food coloring in it to look like blood. This works if you’re having an evening party and can serve the hot chocolate as a dessert during a viewing of one of the Twilight movies. Other drinks could include sparkling water, to match the fanciness of the Cullen’s home, or root beer, to match the rustic American feel of Jacob’s home.
Cake
Think about making a blackberry cobbler for dessert. Check out our blog archives for our absolute favorite recipe for blackberry cobbler. It was in our Memorial Day menu post from last year. The recipe is yummy year round, and it’s always possible to find frozen blackberries around. The color is great for a vampire-themed party. However, if it’s your daughter’s birthday and she wants a proper birthday cake, the easiest thing to do is to order a special Twilight cake from your local bakery. The Twilight theme is hot right now, with the most anticipated movie of the series coming out in a few weeks, so it shouldn’t be hard to get a really nice cake made for your special occasion. Or you could make a simple red velvet cake and decorate it with a pawn and a queen from a chess set. If you have the time, either color the pawn with a red marker, or dip it in melted candy coating dyed red. But it’s not absolutely necessary. Anyway, you’ve got options!
Favors
Send your guests home with the fangs from the bobbing for apples game, as well as Breaking Dawn buttons fancy body stickers. And there you have it! A fun, cheap, dark and dreamy Twilight: Breaking Dawn party that will keep the excitement going until the first part of Breaking Dawn is released in theaters in a few weeks—at which point, you’ll probably be asked to host another Twilight party!
