With Halloween getting ever closer, and Zombie Party Supplies flying off the shelves, we were pretty thrilled to hear that mid-Michigan has a substantial zombie population determined to do their part to beat hunger for families in need! The Lansing Zombie Walk was held on Saturday, September 24, to raise money and donations for the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

The zombie horde gathered at Ferris Park, in downtown Lansing, near the State Capital, where volunteers from the food bank took donations of money and food, for their organization. A wide variety of ghoulish creatures showed up: zombie football fans, zombie waitresses, zombie construction workers, and even a tiny zombie Cinderella. Hundreds of people dressed in elaborate costumes came from all over mid-Michigan to support a great cause, and have fun.

The lurching, stumbling crowd shambled up local streets until they arrived at the steps of the Michigan State Capital, where they were greeted by delighted onlookers. No Michigan state lawmakers could be found, presumably they were barricading themselves into their offices, in an effort to avoid being devoured.

The bits of rotting flesh and blood spatter left behind, were a grim reminder of the zombie apocalypse we had just witnessed.

Apparently even sweet ladies from the Red Hat Society are not immune to the bite of the undead. (All of the zombies were great sports about posing for pictures, as the event finished up. )

People of all ages came out to enjoy the gorgeous day, and help out in the effort to end hunger in the mid-Michigan area. It was nice to see an event that inspired so much creativity (and blood and gore.) The event leaders were thrilled with the turnout, and hope that the Zombie Walk will be even bigger next year.

A few people needed a lesson, to not let a hungry zombie get too close, but thankfully there were some zombie hunters with Nerf guns who were able to protect the civilians on hand! Even people who weren’t dressed up, had a fantastic/terrifying time, and we can’t wait for next year’s third annual Zombie Walk!
