So I’m feeling pretty excited about Klean Kanteens right now. My 15 month old daughter just acquired an 18 oz orange Klean Kanteen with the sport cap and just loves it, and I have also just converted my sometimes ancient-minded parents to using Klean Kanteens instead of buying flats of bottled water for their on-the-go retired lifestyle. I have had my Klean Kanteen for years now, and bought one for my husband as his first birthday present after we were married. We use them every day and feel good about minimizing our plastic waste, when we know we create waste in other ways, by using disposable diapers, or by selling our Prius and leasing an SUV that fits our growing family. Like everyone, we do what we can, and we’re glad to be able to ditch the dependence on plastic bottles.
Moms everywhere can be family heroes if they consider incorporating Klean Kanteens into their family’s daily life. All it takes is a few dollars and some discipline. In the long run, you’ll save money on bottled water, your teeth and gums will be healthier because you’ll be drinking fluoridated tap (or ideally, filtered tap) water, your kids will appreciate the Earth’s resources just a tiny bit more than before, and the Earth will thank you in some way, shape or form, since you won’t be contributing to any landfill by buying plastic water bottles.
You are probably wondering why I am recommending Klean Kanteens instead of just any brand of reusable bottle. After doing a bit of research, I have found that the Klean Kanteen company deserves our respect and that their products are reliably the best quality out there, hands down. The company is a family-owned business founded in 2004, and based in Chico, California. Since the first stainless steel Klean Kanteen was released in 2004, every bottle has been made from food-grade stainless steel, is completely free of BPA and other toxins, and has had no need for any inner liner. In sum, you never taste anything other than the beverage in your Klean Kanteen. No metal, no plastic, nothing funky. Klean Kanteens come in a variety of cool colors and sizes. There are different types of caps, too, to suit any needs. There’s everything from the 12 oz bottle with the sippy cup top for your littlest child, to the 40 oz bottle for you, if you’re on the go from dawn until dusk.
And I admit, I can’t drink without giggling. I know they are trying to fix this issue, but then you sip from a Klean Kanteen sport cap, the valve makes a sound like a silly sort of bird or a children’s pull toy with squeaky wheels. Honestly, it makes drinking fun. I have a simple sport cap on my Klean Kanteen. However, you could add a sippy cup cap to enable a baby to drink from the bottle, or you could add a bamboo and stainless steel cap so that no plastic comes into contact with your beverage and so that you don’t have yet another piece of plastic in your home. The company has also come out with brand new insulated bottles that work like hot/cold thermoses. Klean Kanteens are also great because they are super lightweight and because you can pop them in the dishwasher. Handwashing is also a breeze because the necks are wide enough for bottle brushes.
Now you are probably wondering about the waste created by the company in producing the bottles. Well, the company is making every effort to make their products sustainable (for example, by offering the bamboo and stainless steel caps). Also, they are a member of 1% For The Planet, which requires the Klean Kanteen company to donate 1% of their gross annual sales to environmental causes. Klean Kanteen also partner with several organizations dedicated to the health of people and the planet. Also, just FYI, you’ll notice when you buy your Klean Kanteen, that it was made in China. All Klean Kanteens are, in fact, responsibly manufactured in China in a partner facility, where labor and environmental practices are monitored closely and are held to the highest of standards.
I love my Klean Kanteen, and I hope that you consider making Klean Kanteens part of your family’s daily life.
To promote Klean Kanteen living, here’s a party tip for all the moms out there: If you’re going to be hosting a party outdoors, encourage guests to bring their own water canisters, or buy compostable cups made out of corn and buy a large water dispenser. If you’re having the party at home, use the compostable cups and give guests filtered tap water. That way, there’s no need whatsoever to go back to buying plastic water bottles.
