Thor Party Planning Guide

You don’t need the powers of a Norse God to host a great Thor party. Here are some party planning ideas to help you figure it all out.

INVITATIONS

Invitations set the theme of your party. Depending on how crafty or computer savvy you are, you can either make your invitations or buy standard pre-printed Thor invitations. Make an invitation in the shape of Thor’s hammer with construction paper, heavy card stock or sheets of fun foam and write the party information on the hammer.

DECORATIONS

Ideally, it would be the perfect touch if you could turn your party room into a cave. Some options would be to hang gray fabric in a way to make your room feel cave-like. If you are holding your party outdoors, it might be easier to turn the inside of a tent into the cave where David Blake transforms back in to Thor.

Since turning your house into a cave in Norway isn’t an easy option for everyone, standard balloons and crepe paper streamers are still a fun way to decorate too. Besides solid color balloons, mylar balloons with pictures of Thor continue the party theme nicely. My favorite balloon has Thor wielding his hammer while it shoots lightning bolts. This awesome balloon stands 33″ high and 21″ wide and makes quite an impact.

Mjolnirs hanging from the ceiling could also add just the right touch. You can easily make them from construction paper, card stock or fun foam. For an added WOW! make them look real. Make the hammer head from styrofoam cubes and use a dowel rod for the handle. Spray the styrofoam with gray spray paint and paint the dowel black or dark brown or for even more impact, wrap it with strips of “leather” (inexpensive vinyl or other fabric from the craft store).

GAMES & ACTIVITIES

A game of “Find the Mjolnir” could be fun if you have an area with lots of possible hiding spots. Remember that as kids get older, they need a bit more of a challenge to keep the hunt interesting. You could hide it and start with a very vague clue & if needed give another clue if no one gets close.

Pass the Mjolnir or “Hot Mjolnir” is played the same as Hot Potato. This games is always exciting and hilarious as the kids try to pass it on as quick as possible.

If  you need another quick and easy activity, there is a pre-made Thor Party Game available also. Guests compete to see how many hammers they can toss into their section of the tower.

FOOD

Pizza is almost always a big hit with kids, especially when they get to make their own. This idea takes alittle prep work, but is versatile & so much fun for the kids. You can make your own dough if you like, but it’s much easier if you just use the refidgerated pizza dough that comes in a can. Unroll it onto a greased cookie sheet & using a sharp knife, pizza cutter or even larger (6″ works good) cookie cutters, cut out the shapes you want. Some options for a Thor party could be a viking helmet, his Mjolnir, or use a gingerbread man cookie cutter to cut out Thor himself. Prebake the crust at 425F for approximately 7 minutes  or until it is lightly browned. Allow them to cool & store them in an airtight container in the refridgerator until you’re ready for the kids to make their pizzas. They can spread sauce on their pizzas and top with cheese. Depending on how fancy you want to get, you could cut pepperoni into fun shapes like lightning bolts, hammers and viking helmets.

CAKE

There are many different options when it comes to cakes. You can always order a cake from a bakery if you like, but it is also not too hard to make your own cake. The Thor Cake Decoration Kit that grocery store bakeries use is also available from Discount Party Supplies and you can find step by step directions with pictures in our Thor Cake blog post. Another cool cake idea is Thor’s hammer. Make the head of the hammer from cake and the handle out of rice krispie treats. The great thing about this cake is you don’t need to be perfect with the fondant because dents or wrinkles just add to the character of the ancient hammer.
