Thor 3D opened across the United States this weekend, earning $66 million. Thor Party Supplies are sure to be in big demand in the coming months. You can find everything you’ll need for an awesome Thor themed party at Discount Party Supplies, including a Thor Cake Decoration kit. With this step by step guide, you can make a fresh delicious cake for your Thor fan and never again settle for a mass-produced, grocery store cake. And if your child suffers from any type of food allergies, this is especially helpful. Now you can make a great looking cake that is also safe for your child to eat.
First you’ll need a cake. A 9″ x 13″ cake pan is one that many people have, but you could also make a round layered cake if you only have round cake pans. The steps are basically the same for rectangle or round. For the following tutorial I used a rectangular cake. My cake is on a foil covered cake board, but you can also cut 1/4″ foam core to size and cover it however you would like.
You’ll need buttercream icing, light blue to frost the whole cake, red for your top and bottom borders and white for the lightning bolts. A Wilton tip #12 was used to make both the top and bottom borders.
The first step for the Thor cake is to cut out a pattern in paper. I used wax paper, but you can also use parchment paper or even regular computer paper. I drew the pattern free hand, then cut it out.
Once I had the pattern the size I wanted, I cut it out of cardboard using an exacto knife. The reason I cut it out of cardboard is that when you spray the color mist spray, paper will fly up. Cardboard makes it much easier to hold the pattern down on the cake and you’ll have less overspray.
This is the cake covered in light blue icing. Try to get the icing as smooth and square as possible.
Gently place the cardboard pattern on the cake. It is best to wait 15 minutes or so before doing this to give your icing time to crust a little. If you place the pattern on a freshly iced cake, your icing will stick to the cardboard and smudge or pull off when you remove the pattern.
For this step I HIGHLY recommend wearing a disposable glove on the hand holding the pattern in place. If you don’t have a glove, a large ziplock bag may work also. Spray the top of the cake in light even strokes. If you spray in one place too much, the color will bead up and your coverage won’t be even. You may want to spray a light coat, let it dry for a couple minutes and spray again if you want a darker color.
Keep the pattern in place as you spray the sides, otherwise you will end up with a lot of overspray. Gently lift the pattern off when you are done.
After you have finished with the color mist spray, put your #12 tip into a bag & fill it half way with your red icing. If you are using store bought icing, some brands that come in either a can or tubes come with the plastic tips included. The #12 tip is just a large round tip.
Make your bottom border by squeezing some icing out, then stop squeezing as you move the tip to the right, repeat the same motion all the way around the cake. It is easier to practice on a plate first if you are not using the store bought icings because you can practice on a clean plate, then scoop it back into the bag. That’s not an option with cans or tubes of icing.
Once your bottom border is done, pipe the white icing lightning bolts onto the cake. For this step, I did not use a pastry tip. I put the icing in a bag and snipped off the end just enough to be able to squeeze out the icing. I made random lightning bolts, coming in from the edge of the cake, in various sizes.
The top border is also done with the tip #12. Instead of squeezing and releasing to make the bottom border, just squeeze in a steady way along the top edge of each side of the cake.
Lastly, place the pieces of the Thor Cake Decoration Kit on to the cake where you want them.
It really is as easy as it seems to make your own Thor Cake. Discount Party Supplies carries an extensive selection of cake decorating supplies, so even if you’re not having a Thor party, you’ll find exactly what you need to decorate a cake for your party.
