Mother’s Day Party Supplies aren’t a neccessity for a great celebration, but you would definitely score HUGE points for putting in the extra effort. Moms put so much effort in to taking care of their families every day, so take a little time to show her how much she means to you and your family on Mother’s Day. You don’t have to buy over-priced flower bouquets or expensive jewelry, the best gifts come from the heart. Surprise her with gifts made with love by you and your child(ren).
Of course you’ll have to plan things out ahead of time, making sure you have all of the ingredients and supplies on hand for whatever projects you undertake. And you’ll either have to get her out of the house or have another location to go to to complete the work. Sending her on a shopping spree or a spa day would be the perfect way to get several hours of mom-free time, but if she’s suspicious or not cooperating just tell her you and the kids have a surprise planned and could she please leave the house for a few hours. What mom is going to turn down a few hours to herself, right?
Now, for some fun projects you can do with your kids even if you’re not such a “crafty” guy. Homemade cards are super easy… fold a piece of paper in half, give the kids crayons and they’ll do the rest. If your child can write letters but has trouble spelling, NEATLY write out Happy Mother’s Day and I Love You on a piece of paper so your child can copy it on to their card in their own handwriting.

Rather than buying a dozen roses that might last for a week, let the kids pick out some flowers at your local nursery and plant them in a pretty pot or hanging basket. As they grow and bloom, it will be a constant reminder her family’s love and appreciation.
If you REALLY want to impress her, bake her a cake. It can be as simple as baking a cake from a boxed cake mix & frosting it with store bought icing. To make it extra special, let the kids help with the measuring and mixing. Once the cake has cooled, frost it and let the kids spell MOM and make colorful flowers with M & M’s. Remember, it doesn’t need to look like it came from the Ace of Cakes if it comes from the heart, just make sure the kids wash their hands first.
If you want to bake a cake, but won’t have time for cooling, frosting and decorating, this chocolate cream cheese pound cake recipe is awesome and will still be very impressive. It is rich and fudgy and perfect still warm from the oven. You can still let the kids help with the preparations, then put it on a pretty platter, sprinkle it with a little powdered sugar and you are done…. well as soon as you finish the dishes.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Pound Cake
1 Devil’s Food Cake Mix (I use Duncan Hines)
1 pkg (8 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature or unwrap & microwave for 20 seconds
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup sugar
4 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Spray the inside of a 10-inch tube or bundt pan with vegetable oil spray, put some flour in the pan & shake it around to cover the inside of the pan with flour. Shake out any excess flour, set the pan aside.
- Place the cake mix, cream cheese, water, oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Mix on low for 1 minute. Stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula.
- Mix on medium 2 minutes more.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing it out with the rubber spatula. Place the pan in the oven.
- Bake the cake until it springs back when lightly pressed with your finger and just starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 1 hour. Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes.
- Place a cake plate or platter over the cake pan, flip over the pan and cake plate together and lift the pan off the cake.
- Use a mesh strainer to lightly sprinkle powdered sugar on the top of the cake.
- Store left over cake wrapped in aluminum foil or plastic wrap or in a cake saver at room temperature for up to 1 week.
