I can't help myself. I know it's obnoxious to correct someone's English. When people don't know which one to use, they must think that "whom" sounds more educated. But the word "who" is the subjective case whereas the word "whom" is the objective case. In your sentence, you would ask the question, "Who bought this cake?" You wouldn't say "Whom bought this cake?" Who is the subject of the sentence. In another the example of your sentence, you wouldn't say, "Him bought this cake." You would say "He bought this cake."
