Organizing Your Recipes

For years I have enjoyed cooking, both as a necessity and hobby. I have devoted no small amount of time, and storage space, to this devotion. I have a well-stocked shelf of cookbooks in my kitchen, along with a couple of boxes of them in my basement. I have purchased countless issues of Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple, Cooking Light, Bon Appetit, and Cooks Illustrated; most of which are also in boxes in my basement. I will happily recycle newspapers, entertainment/news/kids magazines and most of the others we subscribe to, but I hold on to my cooking magazines with a determination that borders on the pathological. (P.S. Don’t anybody call “Hoarders” on me, I’m not that bad.)

Sledding Party

Ah, February. February always brings to mind a timeless quote from that much revered philosopher, Garfield, “February is the Monday of months.” Here in Michigan, February is the time when the novelty of winter has long since worn off, and what generally remains is an attitude best described as “grim determination.” Perhaps other, hardier souls, in kinder climates do not have the negative associations with February that I do, but those lucky so-and-so’s can just go have a mojito on some breezy outdoor patio. The rest of us in the Midwest and Northeast will be over here, doggedly rubbing lotion into our dry skin, dreaming of tank tops and flip flops.

One solution to getting through the gray days ahead is to muster up some spirit and actually have fun. I have often found that when I try to create some a good time for my family and our friends, that I end up having fun in spite of myself. That can actually be mildly irritating, when I have gone to all the trouble to work myself up into a real grouchy snit; but these are the sacrifices we make for those we love. So what the heck, I’m going to have a sledding party.

Super Bowl Party

This February the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints will meet up at Super Bowl XLIV. If you have a husband/boyfriend/partner who is already planning which lucky jersey to wear, and stocking up on beer, maybe it’s a good time to plan a last-minute Super Bowl Party. Contrary to popular belief, plenty of women enjoy a good football game, and so a Super Bowl Party doesn’t have to be just for “the guys.” Invite plenty of friends over for some food, fun, and shouting at the big-screen.

The game is always on a Sunday evening, and kickoff is scheduled for 6:28 PM (which by the way NFL scheduling guys, random much?) which means your guests will be hungry. Since this is a last-minute deal, I highly recommend making this a potluck! Saves you on time and expense, at this late date. As the host, you can provide the party supplies for everyone to use, and of course something good for your guests to eat.
